MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Rider's Course Practice Test

The real prize at the end of the MSF Basic RiderCourse isn't just the written test score, it's a completion card that most states accept as a full waiver of your DMV's motorcycle skills test, and often the written portion too, when you go to add the endorsement to your license. That waiver is typically valid for two years, though exact rules vary by state, so confirm your state's specific policy before you assume it covers you.

Getting that card means clearing two separate evaluations, not one:

Written knowledge test: roughly 50 multiple choice questions, about 60 minutes, 80% required to pass. Content comes directly from the classroom portion and the Rider Handbook, protective gear, pre-ride inspection, cornering, crash avoidance, traffic laws, and the physical dynamics of riding. Many questions are scenario-based: given a specific riding situation, which response is the safest.

Riding skills evaluation: a hands-on assessment during the on-bike sessions. Passing both the written test and the riding evaluation is what earns the completion card, the written test alone doesn't get you there.

The course itself runs 20 to 22 hours total, typically structured as two 5-hour on-bike sessions over a weekend, plus classroom instruction. That's a real time commitment, which makes the DMV waiver genuinely valuable if your state offers it, you're trading a weekend for skipping a separate DMV test appointment entirely.

Because the written questions lean scenario-based rather than pure recall, "I read the handbook once" often isn't enough preparation. Practicing with realistic situational questions before your course helps you walk into the written portion already comfortable with how MSF frames these scenarios, freeing up your energy for the hands-on riding evaluation, which is arguably the part that actually determines whether you're ready to ride.
